When

April 11, 2024. 9:00 p.m. - 11:00 a.m.

"Spring is always spectacular in Virginia’s coastal plain, and our parks are a particularly wonderful place to experience it,” said Betsy Washington, Virginia Master Naturalist. “As spring days get longer and warmer, we see an amazing awakening of all living things from the leaves on trees that begin popping out to the pollinators who start buzzing around the early blooming flowers and ferns that are opening. Our early blooming orchids are especially enticing.”

Most of our migrating songbirds fly during the night time then rest and feed during the day before continuing their journey northward. “Although the month of May marks the peak of songbird migration northward, we begin to see a large increase in migratory movements throughout the month of April especially among waterfowl who move north for the summer to breed and feed,” said Kevin Howe, Virginia Master Naturalist. “Belle Isle with its diverse habitats and its proximity to the Rappahannock River provides a perfect rest stop and feeding spot for these birds that just spent hours flying hundreds of miles.”

All are invited to join the Virginia Master Naturalists leaders for a stroll on one of the Park’s many trails to see our spring exploding with the wonders of nature. The Naturalists will also outline the park's many habitats and provide participants with nature photography tips should they need assistance.

Please dress for the outdoors and the walk may include some muddy areas so appropriate footwear for such should be worn.
